People ask: "Why the preoccupation with #Bluesky? Lots of good folks are going there and love it."

@Daojoan does a great job of providing the long answer in this brilliant piece: joanwestenberg.com/big-tech-wa…

But the short answer is that, by funneling users onto another unsafe centralized corporate platform, #Bluesky inhibits the construction of truly defensible public social media.

So now, when something happens over on Bluesky, the Fedi will not be ready to absorb a rapid mass migration.

There is one Mastodon in the room that is glossed over, imho... and that is the long-term financing of the Fediverse.

There is a, in my opinion, culturally strong and dangerous opinion and that is that money has no place in a social network.

But I rather strongly believe that we need to find ways to a) change this cultural attitude, and b) find ways to financially support, long-term the Fediverse.

Excellent point. The Fedi needs money. Big time donors need to step up and create a foundation to strengthen public social media.

Users need to be regularly reminded that giving to the Fedi is an investment in democracy.

So much needs to happen to fortify public social media.

Instead, Bluesky is attracting their attention with its nonsense claims of maybe sorta distributed someday.

We are missing the opportunity.

For example... how about adding a subscription management component directly into Mastodon where Instance admins can "plug in" a payment provider and enable instance members to more easily provide payment to live on the instance?

Just a thought. I have not spent hours upon hours thinking about it... but I do genuinely believe we need to start thinking about a long-term plan for financing all these projects and initiatives.

@nopatience

It's a great thought.

Thinking like this is motivated by people taking an interest in not just using a platform, but taking personal responsibility for helping to build it and shape it in line with their principles.

Too many people are evaluating social media based purely on their convenience and reach, and not factoring in the importance of the integrity of the platform they are contributing to.

Golden Mandala

Another #mandala that I created, this one in #Krita.
Krita, if you are not familiar with it, is an open-source graphic program, that is geared more towards digital painting.

Mandala Created in GIMP 3.0

Hi everyone,
I created this #mandala in #GIMP. If you are not familiar with it, GIMP is an open-source raster graphic program, alternative to Adobe Photoshop. Its version 3.0 came out at the end of last year. And with a bit of practice, it allows to create stunning artwork, such as mandalas.

Linux Setup

I set up Linux as an operating system on my computer yesterday, in an attempt to move away from American big tech corporations.

At first, setting it up feels a big technical, and might be a bit daunting for non-technical folks. but once installed, I found using it rather smooth and natural.

Not all programs are available for Linux OS, so it might not be a solution for everyone. Also, there is the possibility to install it as a dual OS, to have the choice between Linux and Windows at start up.

Below, Linux's logo. Not a lemur, but penguins are cute too.

in reply to Enea

To nom d'utilisateur c'est Essi Parent, tu as des enfants ?

;) Oui je suis papa, mais Parent est mon nom de famille

Hi,
My name is Enea, 35, from France.
I don't know much about lemurs, but I like the idea of the lost continent of Lemuria.

I just joined the lemur space today, and I am getting to know the Fediverse. I also joined a Peertube instance a few days ago. I am looking to move away from centralized social media.
